Although fuel poverty can be defined in various technical ways, the most meaningful indicator is people’s real-life experience.
If you're spending a large portion of your income on energy, having to choose between heating and eating, unable to top up a prepayment meter, or simply struggling to keep your home warm — especially during the colder months due to fear of the cost — then you are likely to be experiencing fuel poverty.
Citizens Advice Essex - through a partnership of local Citizens Advice partners through the East of England can provide free, confidential support to help you:
Manage your energy bills
Access emergency help when you need it most
Improve your home’s energy efficiency so you can stay warm for less
Directly refer you to other services we offer — for example, if you’re in fuel debt, we can connect you with accredited, high-quality debt advice; or if you're having problems with your landlord, we can support you in understanding and asserting your housing rights
And remember, this service is provided regardless of where you live and offers an additional layer of support and accessibility to that which your local Citizens Advice office may be providing.
